<blockquote>Thanks for the contribution, David! And huge apologies for the slow response. WP is horrible about spam, and I get about 125 spam to 1 valuable contribution, so just found you today. Yours is a great example of how structure serves relationship and sets a good stage for trust building and maintenance. THANK YOU! tlh

Are you a person or a spammer? WordPress is not doing a good job of blocking, so not sure how to help if you're a real person. Can you give me more information? thanks, tlh

While I agree with most of what you write, there are some items I would do in another way. But, I appreciate your being able to put into words many of my beliefs on this matter.

I used the concept of virtual staff when I was with a large company that was resource constrained. Monthly, we would hold a conference call, initiated by me at the corporate office and reaching out to all of the IT managers at the various business units (some 25 of them). The goal was to share our top few projects and problems so that others could either pick up the ideas or propose solutions to the problems. I also built a skills inventory so, for example, if I needed Citrix configuration assistance, I could put a skilled resource in touch with a neophyte and they could get the job done AND perform so knowledge transfer. All the while, the relationship building was powerful. We never got to the ultimate stage of actually providing application support in a virtualized staffing model, but that was where we were headed.

I agree, often the "hard" & "soft" factors interrelate, for example more control undermines trust and more trust reduces the need for formal controls. Similarly all the technology in the world wont help if people lack the motivation to connect, and the discipline not to connect with unnecessary communication, we often find too much volume and too little quality of communication
